76028 - Effect of Corrosion Pit on the Structural Characteristics Of Foil Journal Bearings
Due to the corrosive environment, the material loss in a localized area leads to the formation of corrosion pit. It diminishes the structural integrity and performance of the product. To predict and analyze the influence of corrosion pit on the performance of gas foil bearings (GFBs), the FEM analysis of bump-type GFBs is carried out. The effect of corrosion pit is investigated for the circular shape pit. The corrosion pit is modeled nearest to a fixed region in the GFBs. The FEM analysis of bump-type GFBs is performed in ANSYS software. Moreover, the coulomb friction is considered as a variable parameter to analyze their effect on crack initiation. From the results, it is observed that the presence of a corrosion pit leads to crack initiation and increased the equivalent stress in the gas foil bearings. The influence of corrosion pit on the performance of GFBs is increased with an increased in coulomb friction. Moreover, the corrosion pit is fewer influences on the performance of foil bearings if the position of the corrosion pit is nearest to the free end in foil bearings. The rate of crack initiation can depend upon the shape of the corrosion pit. However, the influence of corrosion pitting on the structural stiffness of foil bearings is negligible.
